Is 304 stainless hard to machine or am I doing something

I am trying to turn some 304 stainless round bar and it makes my lathe look stupid. I have to take the tiniest cuts or it just says no. I've tried adjusting speeds and angles and everything. It just seems like it was not meant to be turned. Any ideas of what I should be turning made stainless ? I am thinking 303 would be a more machinable.
